System Engineer – Storage (Expert), McLean
JOB DESCRIPTION
Fuel is looking for a Storage Systems Engineer. The Storage Engineer will apply expertise to the full life cycle of storage area network (SAN) administration, architecture, and support. The engineer will be responsible for defining requirements, creating design documentation, creating installation instructions and deployment plans, and providing O&M support. Project assignments may include engineering geographically dispersed services, private and hybrid cloud environments, and hardening the solutions to address security and SCAP compliance. Additional responsibilities include responding to alerts and customer-reported issues, escalating problems as required, and resolving problems while exercising independent judgment within established support practices to maintain the integrity and security of storage systems. The engineer will also participate in root cause analysis for significant problems and suggest clear recommendations for improvements.
The position requires deep technical knowledge of the management, zoning, provisioning, troubleshooting, and debugging of storage systems as well as the ability to perform backup and data recovery. Other essential qualities include strong analytical skills for troubleshooting complex issues, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Duties may include:
- Provide full life cycle storage area network (SAN) administration, architecture, and support including storage utilizations/capacity planning and adjusting storage requirements.
- Design modifications and changes to the SAN infrastructure and assist in the implementation and documentation of all configuration changes.
- Provide Tier 1 through Tier 3 problem identification, diagnosis, and resolution.
- Contribute to engineering team initiatives and work closely with other teams to address issues and ensure efficient resolution of problems.
- Work with product vendors to resolve hardware issues and improve the use and configuration of vendor products and technologies (such as replication and management software, RAID Configurations, and multi-pathing)
- Research and evaluate new technologies and architecting solutions in storage and backup and make recommendations to management and/or clients.
- Use storage management tools to discover, monitor, provision, and report on the storage infrastructure.
- Maintain the integrity and security of storage systems by following established security protocols and practices; analyze systems and keep systems current with changing technologies.
- Develop, administer, manage, and perform disaster recovery procedures and processes for managed SANs and virtual environments.
Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or other related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, training, and work experience.
- At least 15 years of hands-on, in-depth knowledge and experience in storage principles, including types of storage (e.g., RAID types, network storage types) and best practices for use of each type.
- Experience developing and implementing enterprise and mission storage solutions, reviewing storage requirements to ensure that the infrastructure supports growth, and archiving performance requirements for all supported applications.
- Experience configuring, analyzing, monitoring, and optimizing storage and interfaces to storage and related data paths (such as iSCSI devices, Fiber Channel, LUN sizing), as well as conducting capacity planning and monitoring.
- Meet 8570 IAT II requirements, including at least one of the following certifications: CCNA Security, GIC SP, GSEC, Security+ CE, SSCP, CASP CE, CCNP Security, CISA, CISSP, GCED, GCIH, CySA+.
- Experience designing and documenting enterprise storage backup solutions, leveraging the appropriate mix of proven and edge technologies (e.g., Tivoli, NetBackup, StoreNext, SteelStore)
- Experience with Linux system administration in a virtual environment using VMWare, including installing and maintaining operating systems, configuring and installing hardware/software utilizing monitoring technologies, troubleshooting, and sustaining the operational health of the infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience in Linux, NetApp, and VMWare
Desired Knowledge/Skills:
- UNIX Shell scripting, Python, BASH
- Active Directory/Centrify, system logging and auditing
- Experience managing work tasks via tools such as JIRA and ServiceNow
- Experience with LUN migrations between and within arrays
- Knowledge of firewall concepts including host-based firewalls; storage concepts including NFS, iSCSI, and fiber channel storage for vSphere; resource management and capacity planning
- High-level knowledge of Cloud technologies
